Former West Brom midfielder Gareth Barry confirmed his retirement from football on Thursday.
The 39-year-old has a number of records, including the most appearances made by a single player in Premier League history.
Featuring for clubs such as the Baggies, Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City, Barry has lifted the Premier League title and sealed promotion at the Hawthorns in his final season.
Barry managed to make 61 appearances for the Albion since his move back in 2017, and gradually featured less as the seasons went on.
In his final season, the experienced midfielder managed to make six appearances under Slaven Bilic as the Baggies returned to the Premier League.
In an interview with Henry Winter last season, Bilic was left marvelling at Barry, calling him a “great professional” after taking charge of the club.
Having Barry alongside the likes of Chris Brunt in the dressing room last season will have been vital during the struggles throughout.
Take the final month, for example, the Baggies going up despite not winning any of their final four games – Barry will have been crucial to the younger players potentially suffering from nerves.
Barry will be missed but Bilic wants a younger squad for the Premier League, with that surely being his priority next season.
Many Baggies fans have reacted to the breaking news, with there being nothing but positive comments from the Hawthorns faithful.
