Exclusive: Phillips argues reported WBA target ‘would be a gamble’, makes ‘very difficult’ claim
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has questioned whether Karlan Grant is the right man to fire West Brom to Premier League safety next season.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, the former Baggies hitman claimed that he would like to see somebody with a more proven track record of playing in the Premier League come into the squad.
The Athletic recently reported that the 22-year-old Huddersfield Town forward is open to holding talks with Albion over a potential summer switch.
But Phillips has expressed his doubts over any potential move for the player.
Speaking to West Brom News, he said: “My honest opinion, would he improve the squad that much? No, I don’t think he would.
“I wouldn’t say he set the Championship alight last season. That makes me wonder, is he going to be able to step up?
“I know he’s played in the Premier League, but is he really going to set it alight to score those goals to keep West Brom in the top flight? I think it would be very, very difficult for him.
“It would be a gamble, for me, because that is an area that keeps you in the Premier League. Of course, keeping clean sheets is a massive thing, but if you can’t score goals you won’t stay in that league. I’d like to see somebody with a better track record of scoring goals in the Premier League.”
Grant hit 19 goals in 43 Championship appearances last season for Huddersfield, and can operate out wide on the left as well as through the centre.
The striker joined the Terriers during their relegation campaign from the Premier League, and hit four goals in 13 top flight appearances.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have reportedly bid £17million for this attacker.
