‘Dangerous’ – Paul Merson hails West Brom ‘free spirit’, makes Lionel Messi comparison
Paul Merson has claimed that it was a “dangerous” decision for West Ham to sell Grady Diangana to West Brom.
The wide man completed a permanent move to the Baggies earlier this month following a successful loan spell at The Hawthorns last term.
But the former Arsenal man has been left baffled by the Hammers’ call to let him leave for a Premier League rival.
Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, September 12th, 12pm), he said: “It’s a dangerous sale.
“These two teams – I expect West Ham to around the bottom half, and I expect West Brom to be struggling to stay up.
“But if this lad can produce what he did in the Championship, and he can do that because he’s a free spirit who makes things happen. We saw a back heel just there [in a montage] – if Lionel Messi had done that we’d be going mad.
“He’s dangerous. He could haunt West Ham.”
We couldn’t agree more with Merson, but we’re not complaining either.
It felt almost nonsensical for West Ham to part with Diangana with such little fuss or effort to hang on to him, and our hope is that their loss is our gain.
If you need any proof of how highly thought of the winger was in east London, you need only look at the disgruntled reaction that his departure triggered from captain Mark Noble.
The midfielder has more experience than most in the professional game, and for him to voice his disdain over the deal, we can only assume that Diangana has an awful lot to offer in the Premier League.
