We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
West Brom have been handed a boost in their bid to re-sign midfielder Filip Krovinovic from Benfica, according to Kevin Phillips.
Benfica crashed out of the Champions League last week after a shock 2-1 defeat to Greek club PAOK.
Krovinovic, 25, played no role in the defeat and has reportedly been training away from the Benfica first-team squad until his future is resolved [Record].
Slaven Bilic is eager to re-sign the former West Brom loan star and Portuguese newspaper Record has reported that a loan-to-buy deal worth around £5.5million has been offered to Benfica, who want £9million for the midfielder.
But Mirror journalist Alex Richards has now reported that Benfica have to sell players to balance the books after their unexpected Champions League exit and Phillips believes that puts the Baggies in a good position.
When asked if West Brom have been handed a boost, Phillips told West Brom News: “Yes, you would say so. It probably stacks up in their favour.
“Slaven would like to add him to the squad to give them another option in the midfield.
“Hopefully they’re working hard to get something resolved behind the scenes.
“I’ve said all along that I would like to see him become a West Brom player. He just gives them another option in that area because, as I’ve said before, when you step up to the Premier League you need players who can create opportunities and Krovinovic can certainly create.”
Krovinovic took his time to get settled at Albion last season but he ended up playing a key role in their successful promotion bid from January onwards.
It would be a shame if the Baggies did miss out on him but now Conor Gallagher is at The Hawthorns, the club might not be so willing to pay big bucks to land him.
However, Benfica’s Champions League exit is certainly something that will play a role in any negotiations to sign the 25-year-old playmaker.
In other West Brom news, Gary Lineker was wowed by this one Baggies player despite the defeat to Everton.
