‘Very close’ – Athletic journalist claims West Brom homing in on major summer signing
Athletic journalist Steve Madeley has revealed that West Brom are ‘very close’ to sealing a deal to bring Filip Krovinovic back to the Hawthorns.
Slaven Bilic has been keen to bring the Croatian midfielder back to West Brom following his successful loan spell last season, and it now looks more likely than ever that a deal will be agreed.
The Athletic reports that there have been ‘significant breakthroughs’ in the last week, following discussions between the Baggies and Benfica.
It is also claimed that the deal is looking like another loan rather than a permanent move.
Steve Madeley said, “An agreement is increasingly likely after significant breakthroughs in discussions this week. The two clubs are still working on the exact nature of the deal and whether the loan move includes an obligation to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
“Albion have a limited budget and still need to do at least one more deal in this window so are looking for ways of avoiding commitments to large transfer fees.
“The deal isn’t yet done but at the moment it seems to be heading towards a straight loan with no obligation at all.”
Krovinovic made 40 appearances for the Baggies last season, scoring three goals and registering four assists, helping West Brom achieve promotion back to the Premier League.
Should the deal transpire, he will re-join Grady Diangana, Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson, who have all made their moves to the Hawthorns permanent following loan spells last season.
A loan deal for the Croatian midfielder makes financial sense for the Baggies, with their depleted transfer funds seemingly being reserved for the signing of a much-needed striker.
His signing will provide a lift for the west midlands club, following the Baggies’ disappointing start to the season. He will add quality and depth to Slaven Bilic’s attacking options.
But the need for a striker is still paramount at West Brom, and the loan signing of Krovinovic suggests that the Baggies are still hoping to spend the rest of their transfer funds on a forward who can help fire Bilic’s side to Premier League safety.
