‘They are going to have to wait’ – BBC pundit predicts score in West Brom v Southampton clash

Mark Lawrenson has predicted that the wait for a first Premier League win of the season will go on for West Brom, when they take on Southampton this weekend.

In his weekly predictions for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said he thinks the Baggies will lose 2-0 when they travel to Saint Mary’s on Sunday, following last week’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Chelsea.

The ex-Liverpool defender also said that he thinks West Brom manager Slaven Bilic would’ve taken a point against Chelsea before the game, despite the Baggies throwing away a three goal lead.

Lawrenson said, “West Brom came close to a morale-boosting win of their own after starting really well against Chelsea – but then they got penned in and could not get out of their own half as their 3-0 lead was whittled away.

“Even so, I am sure Baggies boss Slaven Bilic would have taken a point before the game – although I think they are going to have to wait a little longer for their first victory.”

Lawrenson’s opponent for this week’s predictions thinks the Baggies will get a better result on the south coast however, with Manchester City and Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir predicting a 2-2 draw between the sides.

West Brom are still looking for their first Premier League win of the season, with this week’s opponents picking up their first three points this term in their last game away at Burnley.

Danny Ings scored his third goal of the season at Turf Moor, and will no doubt be relishing the chance to play against a defence who have conceded 11 goals in 3 league games.

But Southampton have a defensive problem of their own, with the Saints conceding five in their last home game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Baggies will be extremely happy with their dominating first-half performance last weekend against Chelsea, with Callum Robinson looking especially bright in his new role as a striker.

The concern will come from the second half in which Bilic’s side conceded three goals, meaning they only took one point from the game. Even though they were playing a star-studded Chelsea team, throwing away a three-goal lead is disappointing against any side.

No doubt the Baggies will have been working on their defence in training this week – keeping Ings quiet is the key to three points here.
