We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips believes it’s possible that West Brom will add two more players to the squad before the transfer deadline passes at 5pm today (Friday).
Albion completed the permanent addition of striker Karlan Grant to the squad on Thursday after agreeing a six-year deal with the now-former Huddersfield striker.
However, there are still some concerns about Slaven Bilic’s squad based on how the Baggies have started the Premier League campaign with calls for the club to add more depth at left-back and in the midfield.
When asked if he thinks West Brom will add two players in those positions on deadline day, Phillips told West Brom News: “Possibly. I think it will be one of those that will happen last-minute as perhaps a lot of deals will.
“The priority was the striker and that’s done now. Is there really another position to strengthen? Maybe another midfielder or left-back.
“If they can get two in for cover then there’s a squad there that’s going to compete.
“I don’t think it’s a main priority but if you can get one more through the door it will be a bit of a bonus.”
Whether or not West Brom can sign any more players will be down to the budget that they have left because it has been widely reported that Bilic and Luke Dowling haven’t had a lot to work with since the end of last season.
There could still be a loan deal on the cards and there are also several free agents on the market that could have been looked at by Bilic and Dowling, who have done well to scope out the deals they have completed despite the lack of funds available to them.
We hope that once the season is over, we can look back at the transfer window and say it was a success.
West Brom have added some good young players to their squad in Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana and Grant.
If anything, we’ll have a great attack for the Championship next season if we do get relegated but let’s hope that isn’t something that happens.
In other West Brom news, this Baggies star is open to a move to MLS in January.
