‘I’m told’ – Athletic journalist claims Lai has named his price for West Brom sale
Athletic journalist Matt Slater wrote about an incoming £200m bid for Premier League club Burnley on Wednesday.
And it looks like West Brom owner Guochuan Lai is ready to sell up and take a hit on the £200m he paid for the club back in 2016.
One fan tweeted at Slater and said, “That doesn’t seem a lot for a PL team.”
Slater replied saying, “Neither Burnley nor Southampton have actually been bought for this price tag, which is why I suspect it’s at least 10% too high. West Brom, I’m told, are available at £175m.”
Hard times at West Brom
Lai’s first season at West Brom was a successful one and he got fans onside by buying them free scarves and free drinks.
West Brom finished 10th in the Premier League that season but ended the next season bottom of the league.
The club’s value is massively impacted by what division it’s in.
Fans are getting edgy about what’s going on at West Brom at the moment. Money is obviously an issue and Slaven Bilic is reportedly very unhappy after Ahmed Hegzi was sold from underneath him.
On the pitch, Bilic is coaxing points out of the current squad, with a draw at Brighton leaving them on three points.
That’s good enough to see them sitting outside the relegation zone at the moment, with Burnley, Sheffield United and Fulham sitting below them.
A change of owner can be a very good thing but there are no guarantees but so far there’s been no word of any interest at the price of £175m.
This reply from one West Brom fan sums up the current mood.
