Carlton Palmer makes £40m+ claim about West Brom ‘young player’
Carlton Palmer claims West Brom winger Grady Diangana could be worth over £40million if he “gets his head down and works hard” at The Hawthorns.
Albion signed Diangana, 22, on a permanent basis from West Ham in the summer after the England Under-21 international enjoyed a successful loan spell in the Black Country last season.
Diangana scored eight goals and supplied seven assists in 30 Championship appearances for the Baggies as they won promotion to the Premier League.
However, his start to life as a permanent West Brom player hasn’t gone quite as planned so far with the ex-West Ham winger scoring one goal in eight winless league appearances.
But ex-West Brom midfielder Palmer believes Diangana has what it takes to more than double the price Albion agreed to sign him for in the summer.
“You can’t go and spend £60 or £70million on a player,” Palmer told Football Fan Cast.
“Still, for West Brom, you know, £12million with add-ons I think it goes up to £18million. It’s still a lot of money, but at least it’s a young player who’s only going to get better.
“And then at some point in the future, he might be worth £40million+ if he gets his head down and works hard.”
Diangana was electric in the Championship last season but so far the winger has failed to live up to expectations in the Premier League.
It’s a big step up and West Brom, as a whole, haven’t been anywhere near good enough as a team, which won’t help players like Diangana to find their rhythm.
We have seen what the 22-year-old is able to do though when he scored a magnificent goal at Everton in September.
But Slaven Bilic opted to drop Diangana to the bench for the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday and Albion played a lot better without him than they had done with him at Fulham the week before.
Diangana has a whole international break to impress Bilic at the training ground.
Let’s see if he’s back in contention for the trip to Manchester United and if he is, he’s able to come back with a bang.
