Phillips Exclusive: Questions marks surround West Brom star amid worrying run of form
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is concerned by the form of Grady Diangana since the winger joined West Brom permanently from West Ham in the summer.
Albion agreed what could end up being a club-record £18million fee for Diangana, 22, when he signed on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell in the Championship last season.
However, since stepping up to the top-flight with the Baggies, Diangana hasn’t been as effective as fans were expecting.
Although the former West Ham attacker scored a superb solo goal against Everton in September, the England Under-21 international has done little else of note and was dropped to the bench by Slaven Bilic ahead of the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham last week.
Ex-Baggies striker Phillips admits that Diangana’s form has worried him but is hoping that it’s nothing more than a downturn in his form rather than him not being good enough for the Premier League.
“There’s always that question mark when a player makes the jump [to the Premier League]. He didn’t play regularly for West Ham although he did get a taste of it,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“We see players shine in the Championship and then when they step up that level, it’s a little bit too much for them and I’m hoping that’s not the case with Diangana.
“There is a slight concern but you hope it’s just a blip and he’ll get back on form and be a big threat for the Baggies.”
Diangana should be worried about his spot in Bilic’s starting line-up because the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham last week was one of West Brom’s best performances of the season.
Albion came so close to earning a point against the London club but their hard work was undone by a late Harry Kane goal.
As a result, Diangana might not be back in the starting line-up when West Brom take on Manchester United at Old Trafford next week.
For now, he might have to settle for being an impact sub rather than a regular starter until he shows Bilic he’s worth a spot in the side.
In other West Brom news, this Albion player was torn to shreds for his international performance on Friday.
