West Brom star thought Baggies would beat Newcastle after key moment during loss

Darnell Furlong has admitted that he thought West Brom were going to get their first away win of the season after equalising against Newcastle United.

The Baggies found themselves behind after less than 20 seconds against the Magpies as Miguel Almiron capitalised on some poor defending from Branislav Ivanovic.

Albion equalised through Furlong before a late Dwight Gayle header took a valuable point away from the Baggies but Furlong believes there are still positives to take from the game.

Speaking to the club website, he said, “Once we scored I thought we were going to go on and get a win because we were the better team for much of that second half.

“The boys are devastated. We didn’t start well enough but then we showed what we were about in the second half and came out fighting. We’ve played well in a lot of our recent games and have been in and around it, but it’s those fine margins which decide the game sometimes.

“We can take positives out of the performance and the confidence is there, but we just need to cut those little errors out now.”

There were plenty of positives to take from Saturday’s loss as Albion dominated for large periods of the game but once again the attack couldn’t find a way past the opposition defence.

It took a wonder-strike from Furlong to get the Baggies back into the game after Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson proved to be ineffective in the first half.

The fine margins Furlong talks about are all that stand between West Brom and a decent run of form but it is worrying that those fine margins are constantly causing the Baggies to lose.

Albion now face Manchester City and Aston Villa and they will need more than marginal improvements if they are to take any points from these two sides.

As well as cutting out little errors Albion need to sort out their goalscoring problems and they need to do it sooner rather than later.
