Allardyce makes decision on bringing £45k/wk PL attacker to West Brom – report

West Brom will not be signing either Duncan Watmore from Middlesbrough or Manchester United’s Daniel James during the January window.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who say that Sam Allardyce will not pursue either player in the hope of landing a central defender, midfielder and striker instead.

After dropping out of favour at Old Trafford, Daniel James – on a reported £45k-a-week – has been linked with loan moves away from Manchester United.

Watmore too has emerged as a Baggies target after impressing on a short-term deal at Middlesbrough.

However, he now looks set to sign an extended contract at the Championship side.

Smart decision from Sam

It remains to be seen how much of a budget Allardyce will get this month but it is unlikely to be a huge one.

For the new Albion boss, that means every penny counts and the Baggies do have options already in wide areas.

Coming in on a free, Watmore could have been a risk-free signing that may have had huge rewards, but West Brom have bigger problems to solve.

Matheus Pereira is likely to continue out wide, while Allardyce can also call upon Matty Phillips, Grady Diangana and Kamil Grosicki.

Another central defender and striker has to be the priority for West Brom – no club in the league has a worse defensive record than the Baggies who have conceded 35 times.

Meanwhile, only Sheffield United and Burnley have scored fewer goals and if the club want any chance of staying up, they will need someone to put to the ball in the back of the net.
