West Brom in hunt for Ligue 1 midfielder, club will let him go – reliable journo
West Brom are one of several Premier League clubs who are interested in signing Stade Rennais midfielder Clement Grenier, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.
The Baggies are in desperate need of reinforcements all over the pitch but the centre of midfield has been identified as a serious problem area.
Grenier, 30, has formerly played for Lyon and Roma and he now reportedly has admirers in the West Midlands.
On Saturday night, Nixon replied to a tweet from Stade Rennais, in which they were celebrating Grenier opening the scoring in their league match against Lyon.
He tweeted, “A few Premier teams after this guy. Free-agent now. West Brom among admirers …”
Nixon followed this tweet with another in reply to someone asking if the French club would be ready to let Grenier leave
Nixon simply said, “Rennes will let him go.”
The Baggies could do with a new midfielder who is available on the cheap due to the severely limited transfer budget Sam Allardyce is working with.
Grenier seemingly presents such an option with his contract due to expire in the summer and he could be a useful addition for Allardyce.
The 30-year-old has only made eight Ligue 1 appearances this season and he only started five of those games as he isn’t high on the pecking order at Roazhon Park.
He has picked up two goals and one assist in these games which isn’t a bad return considering his game time.
It is also worth noting that Stade Rennais are fighting at the top of the league this season so Grenier isn’t missing games through being poor, he is being kept out by very good players.
If he is available on the cheap then this could be a very attractive deal for Albion as they look to bring in players who will improve the squad.
Based on Saturday’s FA Cup loss to Blackpool, it would be hard to sign players who could make the team worse.
In other West Brom news, these Baggies fans weren’t happy with this player’s efforts against Blackpool.
