We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has admitted West Brom could lack the funding to complete a deal for Bournemouth forward Joshua King this month.
After being knocked out of the FA Cup by Blackpool, Sam Allardyce confirmed to Sky Sports that if King, 28, was within West Brom’s reach financially, he would be interested in a deal for the Norway international.
However, with speculation surrounding a potential takeover at The Hawthorns [Daily Mail], Phillips is unsure about how much money Albion will have to spend this month.
“I’ve said all along that’s the player I would have gone for,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“He got two goals the other day and played really well but he’s going to cost some money. It’s just whether, with this takeover now and if it’s going to happen, there’ll be money to spend.
“The outgoing of Charlie Austin could bring [Hamza] Choudhury to the club, it’s just whether they can stump up enough cash to bring Josh King in. But, also, would he want to come to West Brom considering where they are in the Premier League?
“I would imagine that if it was made clear he was available to go, I would assume there’d be a lot of other clubs interested in taking him. Certainly teams above West Brom in the table.”
King returned to form earlier this month when he scored twice and supplied one assist in Bournemouth’s 4-1 win against Oldham in the FA Cup.
It was the first time King has scored since the south coast club were relegated but in the three Championship games since the FA Cup win, he’s failed to score in three dismal, winless results for the Cherries.
King is a proven Premier League goalscorer with 48 goals to his name in 161 appearances in England’s top-flight but West Brom’s budget is bound to be low this month.
It seems as though Allardyce is more interested in signing players from overseas where you can get more bang for your buck with Benfica striker Haris Seferovic the latest to be linked with a move to the Black Country.
In other West Brom news, Albion want to sign this Benfica centre-forward.
