West Brom are weighing up a move for Christian Benteke and Crystal Palace are open to the striker leaving.
Albion have been linked with a number of strikers throughout the window, with Haris Seferovic and Mbaye Diagne two names who gained traction over the last week.
Rumours were always likely to circulate following the departure of Charlie Austin, and Sam Allardyce may look to replace him with a familiar face.
Big Sam managed Benteke at Palace with great success in 2016/17, as the striker finished the season with 17 goals.
The Belgium international has not got anywhere near that form since, which is why the Eagles appear happy to let him go.
That reveals a great deal about his relationship with Allardyce, and how the Albion boss played in a way that suited Benteke’s style and ability.
Reuniting the pair could be a brilliant bit of business, and help solve our current striker crisis.
We rightly let go of Charlie Austin as he scored just 11 goals in 45 appearances since signing, and failed to get on the scoresheet this term.
Benteke has a good return of three goals in six league starts by comparison, but his all-round game means he adds so much more than Austin.
We saw that when he visited the Hawthorns in December, as he grabbed two goals and achieved a pass accuracy of 89%, according to WyScout.
Perhaps more importantly, he acted as the focal point of Palace’s attack, winning three aerial duels and receiving 15 passes, a 100% success rate.
That enabled Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze to play off him, and Matheus Pereira and Grady Diangana could do similar if he joins.
Benteke would also be the perfect target for Robert Snodgrass to aim his crosses at, so hopefully our threat from set-pieces would increase too.
There is a lot to like about this potential move, with the only major drawback his £120,000 a week salary.
It would be a certain upgrade on Austin, though, who managed just 70% pass accuracy and 0.2 dribbles per league game this campaign (WhoScored).
It is possible a loan arrangement of some sort could be worked out for Benteke, and if Big Sam is desperate to sign him then he deserves to be backed accordingly.
In other West Brom news, Joseph Masi has provided an update on target Dwight Gayle.
