Matheus Pereira could leave West Brom this summer due to a release clause in his contract, Carlton Plamer told Football FanCast.
However, according to The Telegraph, no Albion player has a set release clause in their contract, so West Brom can negotiate transfer outgoings on their own terms.
It may be true that West Brom are open to selling Pereira, with his asking price set at £17million according to UOL Esporte, but the club’s hand will not be forced in any sale.
Palmer was asked about the Brazilian’s future and he believes a possible clause in his contract makes him likely to leave.
He told Football FanCast, “I’m sure there’s clauses put in because they brought players, a lot of players, in in a short space of time.
“So I’m sure there are release clauses for players that they can leave or clauses that they would have to take a drop in salary if they went down.”
“Top players who are international players, they’re going to want to play in the Premier League or in a top league somewhere.
“They’re not going to want to play in the Championship, so the better players, I’m sure West Brom will lose.”
Players like Sam Johnstone and Pereira, who have proved themselves in the Premier League, are unlikely to accept relegation.
And they are even more unlikely to accept a reduction in wages, particularly when their performances warrant the opposite.
The pair may hand in a transfer request in order to push for a move but the club holds all the power in deciding their futures – particularly Pereira as his contract has three years left to run.
The Brazilian has already shown he is a class above at Championship level so Luke Dowling may be keen to keep him.
We could dangle the prospect of promotion in front of him, promising to sell if we do not make it back up.
After all, promotion would be worth a lot more than the £17million fee we could get for him.
Keeping a player like Pereira sends out a big statement too, not only to the rest of the division but also to potential recruits and, perhaps most importantly, Sam Allardyce.
In other West Brom news, Kevin Phillips believes Albion fans should be ‘excited’ by major April takeover update.
