West Brom did not manage to do the double over Wolves by beating them again on Monday but Thierry Henry was still impressed with Conor Townsend’s quality.
The former striker was providing analysis for Sky Sports and he raved about Townsend’s cross that led to Mbaye Diagne’s equaliser.
Townsend picked out the striker with brilliant accuracy, and Diagne had the easy task of heading the ball into the bottom corner.
Henry highlighted Diagne’s threat in praising Townsend, saying on Sky Sports, “From the West Brom point of view, they could have scored before the goal, but it’s a great goal and a great ball in.
“You know a cross is coming, the danger is Diagne. You need to stay in contact with him, you can always clear it or flick it out, but he overgoes. Goal.
“The quality of the cross was amazing.”
Townsend has been one of our best players this season so it is great to see him getting the praise he deserves.
And the fact it comes from a Premier League icon in Henry should really boost his confidence and belief.
The cross for Diagne’s equaliser was a brilliant example of the quality Townsend possesses, and hopefully he will get more chances to attack in the Championship next sesaon.
He could be a wonderful partner down the left flank for Grady Diangana, who has obviously had a season to forget.
But if Townsend shows a willingness to make runs beyond Diangana that could create the space the winger needs to take on defenders and display his own skill in the attacking final third.
We have a few pieces in place to build a promotion-winning squad and Townsend is one of them, so we are excited to see what he offers next season.
