Joe Cole claims Matheus Pereira will leave West Brom

Former Premier League winger Joe Cole has stated that Matheus Pereira will not stay at West Brom for next season in the Championship.

The Baggies had their fate confirmed on Sunday night when they lost against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Fans and the club hierarchy had already been prepared for it, but the telling blow still left an uneasy feeling in their minds.

While Sam Allardyce’s future remains uncertain, although he’s likelier to stay on than not, some of the players are expected to leave as they have aspirations to play in the top flight and Premier League clubs are also interested in signing them.

One such player is Pereira, who is arguably the club’s best outfield player. He is subject to transfer interest from Aston Villa, and Cole expects him to leave West Brom in the summer.

He said on BT Sport, “You’re going to lose Pereira, because a player of his quality needs to be playing in a team set up to get his attribute outs.

“He will be picked up. No chance [they keep him]. I’ve watched him three or four times and he’s levels above the players around him on the pitch.

“Any team outside the top five will be looking at the top five will be watching him thinking he can come and play for us.”

Hoping we can convince him

There’s no denying that Pereira is a Premier League level player and deserves to be playing in the top flight.

He’s been one of our few shining sparks this season and losing him would have a detrimental impact on the dressing room.

Convincing him would be a tough sell but he could have an understanding with the club that would allow him to leave if we don’t secure promotion on the first attempt.

We’ve got to do everything we can to hold on to him, even if there is some interest from clubs outside the “Big six”.

However, if a substantial offer comes our way, the decision makers could be tempted to part ways and invest that money to strengthen in other positions.
