Joseph Masi: There is a chance Sam Allardyce has not decided West Brom fate
Sam Allardyce may still not have decided his West Brom future says Express and Star journalist Joseph Masi.
Big Sam first promised an announcement on whether he is staying or leaving when relegation was confirmed.
That moment came against Arsenal ten days ago but the situation is still as unclear as it was previously, with Allardyce most recently saying a decision would come before the final game of the season, which is on Sunday against Leeds.
In anticipation of that game, Masi gave an insight into Allardyce’s thinking and what his answer could be later this week.
He told the Baggies Broadcast podcast, “I think there is a chance he genuinely doesn’t know what to do. He’s accustomed to being in the Premier League.
“He really won’t want to end his career having got relegated with Albion and failed to get West Brom up, that will be a really disappointing end.
“But he loves it, he lives and breathes football, he’s a football man.
“He is debating in his head whether he wants to go through a gruelling 46-game campaign, and whether he wants to put his family through it.
“I think he’s going to wait until the last possible moment and then go ‘right, okay my decision is…”
“I think it will be very hard for him not to give an answer at his pre-Leeds press conference on Friday.”
A sign he is staying?
We have little doubt that if Allardyce was planning to leave an announcement declaring exactly that would have been made already.
The fact we have gone so far into the season suggests Big Sam is enjoying his time here.
His attendance at West Brom’s under-18s FA youth cup match on Friday also hints he is thinking of staying on.
And his choice to play Hal Robson-Kanu and Karlan Grant against Liverpool indicates he wants to see them in action ahead of next season, as he will still be in charge then.
Knowing Big Sam, he will not want to leave West Brom or football as a whole off the back of his first relegation – that will leave a sour taste.
He has always been competitive and determined to prove people wrong.
And he has had his fair share of doubters this campaign, so what better way to prove them all wrong by getting us promoted next season.
