Kevin Phillips reacts as West Brom name starting XI v Leeds United
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has slammed Sam Allardyce for naming loan players in his West Brom starting line-up to play Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.
It’s the final match of the season and Albion’s relegation fate has been sealed for weeks. However instead of handing youngsters or fringe players a chance to impress against Leeds, he’s opted to use players who are very unlikely to be at The Hawthorns next season
West Brom announced on Twitter prior to kick-off that Okay Yokuslu, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Conor Gallagher have made Big Sam’s starting line-up.

Mbaye Diagne is on the bench and Matheus Pereira is out injured but Allardyce has still handed a few youngsters a spot on the bench, including Caleb Taylor, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Tim Iroegbunam.
Ex-West Brom striker Phillips can’t understand why the loanees have made the side.
“There’s no reason whatsoever to play any of the loan players,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“The only reason you’d play them is to not end the season on a real low.
“His other players have already shown they can play at that level so why wouldn’t you play them?
“There’s nothing whatsoever to play for.
“Even look at the players on the fringes to get them out there in the spotlight.”
West Brom were battered by Leeds earlier this season with the Yorkshire club winning 5-0 at The Hawthorns.
Allardyce is likely to want revenge for that heavy home defeat but it doesn’t seem as though his starting line-up gives any thought for next season.
Albion will be back in the Championship next term so why hand more game-time to players who definitely won’t be here?
In other West Brom news, Albion would have to pay £700,000 to hire this manager who’s admired by the board.
