Rob Dorsett: Sam Johnstone likely to earn England call-up for EUROs

West Brom ended the season with yet another disappointing result as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat against Leeds United.

It was a poor afternoon all round at Elland Road, with Sam Johnstone even making a big mistake on our way to another loss.

The season may not be over for the keeper though, with the European Championships around the corner for England.

Nick Pope has undergone surgery this week on an injury and now appears likely to miss the major tournament for the Three Lions.

Does this open a door for Johnstone?

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett shared an update on the squad on his personal Twitter account, and it was good news for the Baggies.

Southgate planning to call up Jordan Henderson and  Harry Maguire for the England squad on Tuesday – if medical reports before then suggest they can play some part in Euros.

“West Brom’s Sam Johnstone also likely to get called up because of Nick Pope knee surgery.”

Despite his blunder at Elland Road yesterday, Johnstone has been the one player alongside Matheus Pereira keeping us competitive this season.

According to WyScout, no keeper has made saves in Europe’s top-five leagues, showing just how well our stopper performs under pressure.

It has been no secret that our defence has been simply embarrassing, and we were destined for the Championship from the very start of the campaign.

Without Johnstone, it would have happened much sooner though.

It would be amazing to see the keeper involved in the major tournament next season, and who knows? It could even help us push our price even further with his exit very likely over the summer.
