Joseph Masi: Chris Wilder-West Brom news is premature
Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi has poured cold water on news that Chris Wilder is close to being appointed as the new West Brom manager.
On Thursday, Mirror journalist David Anderson reported that as long there are no late hiccups, Albion will appoint Wilder as Sam Allardyce’s successor at The Hawthorns.
However, Masi has since claimed that Albion still want to interview “one or two” other candidates for the managerial vacancy in the Black Country, despite Wilder being the “leading contender”.
Jumping the gun?
We’ll have to wait and see whether Wilder is appointed but everything we’ve seen suggests it’s just a matter of when and not if the ex-Blades boss will head to The Hawthorns.
While Albion may have other candidates – Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has also been strongly linked with the vacancy – none of them are likely to outshine Wilder.
What can be said in another interview that will impress them more than what Wilder can give?
Lampard would be a great appointment. He’s got links to Chelsea and Manchester City that would come in handy in terms of the loan market while he also showed at Derby he’s more than capable in the Championship.
Wilder, though, has a proven CV of winning promotions, taking teams up through every level of the EFL from the National League to the Premier League.
Anderson’s tweet may have been jumping the gun but it does seem an inevitablity.
