Kevin Phillips: Sam Johnstone value to go up with West Brom goalkeeper named in England squad
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
West Brom may be able to demand more than £20million for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after he was included in the England squad, according to Kevin Phillips.
After a stunning season at The Hawthorns, 28-year-old Johnstone was included in Gareth Southgate’s final squad for the upcoming European Championships.
While it’s unlikely that he’ll start any games for the Three Lions with Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson ahead of him in the pecking order, Phillips claims that the Albion owners will see this as an opportunity to demand more money for the reportedly in-demand ‘keeper.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “If I’m the owners I’d be thinking, ‘he’s that valuable now, he’s in the England squad and going to the Euros’. You’d be thinking he’s worth more [than £20million] now. It’s just business.
“He deserves to be in the squad with the season he’s had.
“I don’t think Johnstone’s price tag will go up dramatically but certainly, the business people will want as much as they possibly can.
“Any potential pursuers are going to have to pay more than what they would have if he hadn’t have got in the England squad.
“If Chris Wilder goes into West Brom that’s an area he’ll definitely have to identify if Johnstone moves on.”
The Express & Star has recently reported that West Brom are bracing themselves for bids for Johnstone, who they value at £20million.
It is understood that West Ham and Watford are lining up offers for the Baggies number one while Manchester United, Tottenham and Leeds United have also been linked.
Albion may be demanding £20million but ultimately, Johnstone is in the final year of his contract and prospective buyers will know that.
We’d be lucky to get near that fee but his England call-up will surely put the Baggies in a better position than they were beforehand.
