Steve Madeley sends Sam Johnstone message after West Brom star earns England start
The Athletic’s Steve Madeley was awestruck on Sunday after learning that West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was set to make his senior England debut.
The Three Lions named their starting XI for their final friendly fixture before their European Championships campaign begins next week, and Johnstone was the notable inclusion as the only starter without an international cap to his name.
Johnstone, 28, got the nod ahead of fellow shot-stoppers Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and Aaron Ramsdale to play against Romania at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on Sunday evening.
After the news was announced Madeley took to his personal Twitter profile to send a message to Albion’s number one.
He wrote: “Wow. Congratulations.”

Stock is rising
That ought to put a few more millions on his price tag.
Johnstone was in imperious form for Albion last season, despite our dismal season that saw us relegated back to the Championship after a one-season stay in the Premier League.
Not many players emerge from such a campaign with their reputation’s considerably enhanced, but Johnstone can lay claim to that, alongside playmaker Matheus Pereira.
There have been reports linking him with a move away from the club, and West Ham have been named as frontrunners for his signature. [talkSPORT]
It’s not a certainty that he will depart the club but it seems the more likely scenario, and it is a position where we have some strength in depth with Alex Palmer and Luke Griffiths earning rave reviews at their respective loan clubs, while there is an experienced replacement in David Button.
If funds are expected to be tight this summer then this might well be an area we look to cash in on, and Johnstone’s England debut may give us the chance to raise the price further.
