West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone says England duty has helped soften relegation heartbreak

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made the most saves (166) in the Premier League in 2020-21 [AS], earning himself a spot in England’s European Championship’s 26-man squad.

However, his brilliant individual campaign was not enough to keep the Baggies up.

Johnstone made his debut for the Three Lions on Sunday, keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Romania.

Manager Gareth Southgate’s side ended their preparations for Euro 2020 on an impressive note, and the Baggies goalie will be hoping to make an appearance during the tournament.

Johnstone is using preparations for the Euros to take his mind off the relegation heartbreak he suffered with West Brom.

When asked if being with the national team has helped soften the blow [Independent], Johnstone replied: “Yes.

“It was such a big disappointment for that to happen and I literally had a week off and was back with England.

“So it takes my mind off it because I’m enjoying this moment, still training and working hard every day.”

Premier League quality

While we would have loved to have the 28-year-old available in goal for us next season, he will most likely remain in the top-flight from the look of things.

Johnstone has proven that he has what it takes to be a mainstay in the Premier League and would be keen to impress for country too.

Making England’s squad for next summer’s World Cup would be his next target, and staying at West Brom will not help him achieve that dream.

While Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Manchester United’s Dean Henderson are expected to do battle for the number 1 spot in Southgate’s starting line-up, the Baggies star will be looking to pip them to the position, and another impressive Premier League campaign would boost his chances.

We now have to cash in on Johnstone and secure a quality replacement in the bid for an instant top-flight return.

The England international will be greatly missed, but we can take pride in the fact that we played a huge role in helping him achieve his dreams with the national team.
