Kevin Phillips: Davis and Gayle could form good strikeforce at West Brom
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips would like to see West Brom have a strikeforce of Dwight Gayle and Keinan Davis in the Championship next season.
Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has recently mooted the possibility of Davis, 23, leaving Aston Villa on loan to join the Baggies while the Sunday Mirror [print edition, May 30, page 76] has linked Albion with re-signing Gayle from Newcastle.
Phillips suggests the two forwards could combine quite well with each other if they sign for West Brom in the summer.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “Davis a good young player who’s got great potential but you just don’t know until it happens, do you? We saw Zohore come to West Brom and it just didn’t work out for him.
“Davis has shown he’s got quality and he’s got youth on his side.
“If they get him and Dwight Gayle through the door, what you are bringing in is quality, goals from Gayle and creativity from Davis.
“They could be a couple of good signings.”
Gayle lit up The Hawthorns while on loan there in 2018/19 but Davis is yet to taste a proper season of senior football.
The 23-year-old has never been sent away on loan by Aston Villa but he did play every now and then for Dean Smith last season, scoring one goal in 15 Premier League appearances.
Of course, Albion fans will remember that one goal as it was against them at Villa Park in April after a mix-up between Sam Johnstone and Kyle Bartley.
He showed good anticipation to get that goal and we could do with that as our front-line is devoid of quality.
But whoever is next in charge at The Hawthorns will at least have Callum Robinson and Karlan Grant to select.
We can totally understand why they might want an upgrade or two though.
In other West Brom news, the Albion could appoint their new manager by the end of Thursday.
