Jon Newsome doesn't see West Brom's Sam Johnstone joining Leeds United
West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has been linked with a move to Leeds United following the side’s relegation.
The England international is expected to remain in the top-flight to boost his chances of remaining with the national team beyond this summer, with the Elland Road outfit, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United [Express] some of the sides credited with an interest in him.
More teams are likely to emerge for the West Brom star in the coming weeks, but former Leeds player Jon Newsome does not see him joining Marcelo Bielsa’s side this summer.
“I think he’d want to come in, you want to come in and not be guaranteed the No.1 shirt but you’re being bought and brought into a club where you’re going to be playing every week unless something else happens.
“I can’t see that happening because [Illan] Meslier’s had such a great season.”
Not good enough for Leeds?
Johnstone has proven himself in the Premier League and will fancy his chance of starting for any of the clubs outside the top-six.
While a move to Leeds cannot be ruled out with Kiko Casilla likely to leave, we do not see the Baggies goalie pipping Illan Meslier to the starting berth.
Both are excellent shot-stoppers, but the Frenchman is comfortable with the ball at his feet and has been crucial to Leeds’ style of play.
The Whites love to build up possession from the back, and Johnstone is not used to that.
A move to West Ham looks more feasible, with manager David Moyes looking for Lukasz Fabianski’s long-term replacement.
The 36-year-old has a year left on his deal, and the Baggies ace could be ideal to come in this summer.
Johnstone has to move to a side where he will be the guaranteed starter, and has done enough to attract suitors.
We are eager to see which club he joins next and cannot wait to see him establish himself in the Premier League and England squad.
