Kevin Phillips: Ipswich getting good deal for West Brom midfielder Rekeem Harper

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips suggests West Brom are at the rough end of the reported deal that’s taking Rekeem Harper to Ipswich.

Earlier this week, the East Anglian Daily Times reported that the League One club is in advanced talks to sign the 21-year-old midfielder.

It is understood that an offer is on the table. TWTD reports the initial fee for Harper would be £500,000 while the East Anglian Daily Times adds to that by reporting that the deal could rise over £1million due to extra clauses.

Phillips claims it’s likely Harper wants to leave The Hawthorns but still feels as though the Baggies might have raised more cash for their once-highly-rated academy product.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “It doesn’t sound as though it’s very much but I think it sounds like the player has made it clear he wants to leave.

Rising up to £1million, it’s a good deal for Ipswich, to be honest. It’s not a lot of money and I think he’ll strengthen their squad.

It doesn’t sound like a lot of money but if they can get £1million on appearances then it’s better than nothing. But Ipswich are getting a really good deal there.”

If Harper leaves West Brom then he’ll be leaving after having made 42 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals.

The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Birmingham City in the Championship but struggled to earn regular starts despite their lowly position in the second-tier.

A drop down to League One could be beneficial to Harper in terms of his overall development and we wish him all the best at Portman Road.

In other West Brom news, Phillips shared what James Morrison told him about the managerial situation at the Albion.
