Kevin Phillips: West Brom won’t sell Matheus Pereira on the cheap

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

West Brom do not need to sell Matheus Pereira this summer unless the player wants to leave, according to Kevin Phillips.

The Express & Star reported last week that Pereira, 25, will not be sold for a cut-price fee this summer with the Baggies set to have a “competitive” transfer budget ahead of next season.

It is understood that clubs in the Premier League and Bundesliga are considering bids for the Brazilian attacking midfielder but the Albion value him a lot higher than the £15million that was mooted in some reports.

Phillips doesn’t hold too many concerns over Pereira

However, the ex-Albion forward does suggest the next managerial appointment at The Hawthorns could have a major impact on the former Sporting CP player’s future.

Phillips feels as though Pereira could be doing what Harry Kane is doing at Tottenham and is waiting to see who becomes then new boss.

Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “They don’t need to sell him. They have parachute payments, they’ve got some money and if they’re serious about bouncing back next season, which I’m sure they are, you have to keep your best players and he’s certainly one of those.

If he was to leave without a manager there you’d be concerned. From another perspective, Pereira might just be sitting there waiting to see who is appointed.

It might be a similar scenario to Tottenham with Harry Kane to see whether he wants to stay or go. Pereira might be similar. But you’re hoping he wants to stay and help the club get back to the Premier League next season.

If he was to go, they’re not going to let him go on the cheap. He doesn’t warrant going on the cheap.

He’s a good quality player and it will cost a few quid for any club to try and prise him away.”

Pereira was in superb form at West Brom last season, scoring 11 goals and supplying six assists in 33 Premier League appearances despite the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Last month, The Express reported that Leicester, Leeds and West Ham are interested in signing the Brazilian playmaker.

In other West Brom news, this Albion youngster has been spotted signing a deal with Chelsea.
