The Athletic journos detail what West Brom fans will get with Ismael
West Brom appointed former Barnsley manager Valerien Ismael on a four-year deal and ended their long-drawn chase for a new head coach.
The Baggies have been looking for a successor to Sam Allardyce since he decided to step down after the 2020/21 Premier League season, and they finally announced it on Thursday.
For the longest time, Chris Wilder appeared to be the favourite, but in the end, the Frenchman was given the keys to the Hawthorns throne.
In their piece for The Athletic, Steve Madeley and Tom Worville wrote, “His tactics of pressing opponents relentlessly to force mistakes helped Barnsley achieve the ninth-best figure for non-penalty expected goals of the 24 Championship teams.
“They relied on their extraordinary pressing intensity to force the mistakes which provided them with chances.”
Can get the Hawthorns buzzing again
Ismael, who has only one year of managerial experience in England under his belt, will not be too well known by the casual supporter.
However, he’s been coaching for the last decade and comes to the Hawthorns with impressive training methods and an ideology about how the game must be played.
His inspirational leadership skills are equally noteworthy, and one that certainly will have put him ahead of numerous managers in the queue for the West Brom job.
Barnsley’s chief executive Dane Murphy said, “He (Ismael) has a strength in his leadership that is unquestionable in a way.
“No matter where you come from in the world, what language you speak, you look at him and the message he is delivering and you think.”
It’s so important that the coaches get their message across correctly to players and we’re certain that Ismael can achieve this at the club.
He’s helped Barnsley punch above their weight and with a good transfer window we’re going to be right back into the Premier League and under the Frenchman, we’re hoping to become a team that can retain our top-flight status and become a mainstay in the division.
