Kevin Phillips reacts as Pereira arrives for West Brom pre-season training
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is delighted to see Matheus Periera pictured in pre-season training at West Brom despite speculation linking him with a move away from The Hawthorns.
The 25-year-old scored 11 goals and supplied six assists in 33 Premier League appearances for the Albion last season as they were relegated and is understandably wanted by teams still in the top-flight [Express].
Despite the speculation, Pereira has been spotted going through what is no doubt a tough pre-season training regime under new manager Valerien Ismael.
Ex-Baggies striker Phillips admits that we’re yet to see the transfer window in full swing but is encouraged by the lack of noises surrounding Pereira and the recent images of him on social media.
“Once players get back to pre-season and now we’re at the latter stages of the Euros, that’s when clubs will start making moves for players,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“It’s great that he hasn’t made any murmurs. We’ve not really heard anything saying he’s desperate to leave or he’s handed in a transfer request.
“It’s great that he’s there on the first day – let’s hope he’s there on the last day of pre-season training and the day before the first game of the season.
“They want to strengthen that squad, not weaken it. They’ll definitely get weaker if they lose him so it’s good news that he’s turned up.”
West Brom have only signed Alex Mowatt since the end of last season but have lost a number of players who’ve reached the end of their contracts and loan deals.
Sam Field and Rekeem Harper have also been sold, severely depleting Ismael’s options in the centre of the park before Mowatt arrived after his release from Barnsley.
Selling Pereira would certainly help the Baggies manoeuvre the transfer market but there’s no denying that everyone wants to see the Brazilian stay.
In other West Brom news, Jake Livermore could lose the captain’s armband after what happened last week.
