Kevin Phillips raves about Trevoh Chalobah as West Brom close in on Chelsea midfielder
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has been raving about Trevoh Chalobah as West Brom reportedly close in on a deal to sign the Chelsea midfielder.
London News Online has reported that within the next week, the 22-year-old will head to The Hawthorns and “it’s unlikely the Blues will demand a fee” for him.
Chalobah has never made a first-team appearance for Chelsea and has spent the last three seasons out on loan at Ipswich, Huddersfield and French club Lorient.
He played 29 times in Ligue 1 last season but it does not seem as though his spell at Lorient has done enough to assure Chelsea he has a future at Stamford Bridge.
However, West Brom are seemingly keen to land the defensive midfielder, who can also play as a centre-back.
Ex-Albion striker Phillips is happy to see a deal for Chalobah potentially going through.
Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “I think he could be a good signing, he’s certainly got the talent.
“He’s matured a lot now, there was a lot of hype around him when he was younger.
“He seems like he’s been around a long time but maybe now someone can get hold of him and develop him and I think under the new manager at West Brom, that could be a decent signing.
“Technically he’s a very good player, he’s very physical as well, he can get stuck in and play a few roles.“
Chalobah would be the second signing of the summer for the Baggies, who’ve already landed former Barnsley and Leeds midfielder Alex Mowatt.
Albion’s midfield options are light at the moment and if they can get a cut-price deal done for Chalobah as soon as possible, it would certainly serve as a boost for Valerien Ismael.
In other West Brom news, Jake Livermore could lose the captain’s armband after what happened last week.
