Kevin Phillips raves about West Brom-linked striker Famara Diedhiou

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has been raving about ex-Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou after he was linked with a move to West Brom.

Bristol Post journalist Gregor MacGregor reported earlier this week the Baggies are interested in a move for the 28-year-old, who’s a free agent after his contract at Ashton Gate expire at the end of last season.

It is understood that the Senegal international has offers on the table from clubs in both Britain and Turkey.

And it seems that if Albion do land Diedhiou, Phillips would be happy due to the characteristics the striker possesses.

Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “On his day, he’s a handful. He got a few goals last year.

At that level, he’s shown he can cope. He’s a big, powerful player who can play to his strengths and hurt you.

If he was to come on board, he’s certainly a player that will give defences a rough time.

He’s got qualities. He can score goals but can also frustrate you as well.”

Diedhiou didn’t have the best of seasons last time out as he netted just 10 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions.

He started 23 times in the 2020/21 Championship season but scored just eight times in total as he ended the campaign with just two goals in his last 18 outings for Bristol City.

He is a proven striker in the Championship.

In total, Diedhiou has 154 appearances in England’s second-tier and 46 goals to his name. He’s averaged around a goal every three matches, which is a decent tally.

We’re just a bit concerned about his performances in front of goal last season but at the end of the day, it wasn’t a great campaign for Bristol City as a whole and he was bound to have suffered.

In other West Brom news, Albion are eying a move for this Premier League centre-back.
