Iroegbunam exit from West Brom to join Aston Villa concerns Kevin Phillips
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is concerned as to why Tim Iroegbunam has opted to quit West Brom to join Aston Villa.
It has been reported that Iroegbunam, 18, is on the verge of joining the Villans with Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi saying the young midfielder rejected a “lucrative” contract to stay at The Hawthorns.
The Birmingham Mail has reported that Iroegbunam’s arrival at Villa will be announced in the coming days and Phillips is worried about Albion’s failure to hang onto their younger stars.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillip said: “I’ve said all along when they let go of your players, it’s a concern.
“Why are they leaving? Why are they not given an opportunity at their own club? With West Brom going down, he could have been a player that was useful. He’s going to Aston Villa but he’s not going to be involved in the first-team.
“I don’t know if there’s more to it but it concerns me a little bit when players are leaving your club to join another club where they won’t get an opportunity.”
Iroegbunam has already left West Brom due to his contract expiring but never made a first-team appearance.
However, he is only 18-years-old and got onto Sam Allardyce’s bench for the final match of last season in the Premier League when the Baggies lost away at Leeds.
We cannot say for sure how Iroegbunam will fare down the road at Villa but you would have thought he’d get more first-team opportunities in the Black Country due to the shortage of central midfielders in the senior squad.
There’s definitely something worrying about West Brom’s inability to hold onto their most gifted young talents.
In other West Brom news, Albion are eying a move for this Premier League centre-back.
