The Athletic share why Cheikh Diaby was released by West Brom
West Brom released Cheikh Diaby at the end of last season, and it was a decision that left the majority of the fanbase bewildered.
The young Frenchman had been tipped to jump into the first team at The Hawthorns and made the squad at times in the Premier League.
Despite that, Diaby was let go this year and it looks as though concerns over his fitness was one of the main reasons.
Writing in his latest edition of the Athletic’s Mailbag, Madeley explained the decision to let go of the exciting attacker.
“The club had high hopes for his talent and for a while, it looked like he might be pushing towards the first team,” he wrote.
“But he then went backwards and I think there were some concerns about his overall fitness, which contributed to him being released.”
This certainly came out of nowhere, but if there were big concerns over essential parts of his game, it makes sense.
Fitness was never one of our strong points under both Slaven Bilic and Sam Allardyce, so if he couldn’t impress under those two, there was no chance now.
Valerien Ismael is known for his intense methods which rely on fitness, and Diaby doesn’t appear to be the forward who will constantly press the opposition defence.
We can’t say that we’re not disappointed, but these are the tough decisions that need to be made if we want to succeed in the long run.
The Albion can’t afford to be carrying anyone in their bid to get back to the Premier League, and Diaby didn’t look ready to do whatever it takes to succeed.
