Newcastle end their pursuit of West Brom defender Kyle Bartley - report
Newcastle are no longer interested in signing West Brom defender Kyle Bartley this summer, according to The Telegraph.
The Magpies are keen on signing a centre-back this summer, but have ended their £3m pursuit of the Baggies star player.
The Birmingham Mail reported recently that West Brom were hellbent on keeping the player at the Hawthorns beyond this summer and will be delighted that a Premier League side is no longer keen on acquiring his services.
Have to keep him
Bartley has been one of the rocks of our defence and is going to be of paramount importance next season if we are to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Under Sam Allardyce, he proved to be a towering leader at the heart of the defence and proved to be an aerial threat in both boxes.
He’s 30 and seems to have at least three more years to give at his best. We’re hoping that he can find an agreement with the club, sign a new deal and stay on for at least one more season.
If we then don’t manage to get promoted, there should be provisions made to allow him to leave.
He’s currently got one year left on his contract so the club will be trying to get him to extend as losing him on a free next summer will not be the smartest of financial decisions taken by the Baggies hierarchy.
Bartley is a player who makes others around him better and his presence inside the dressing room is equally important.
He’s proven to be an inspiration for the younger players and has become one of the fan favourites at the Hawthorns.
Chris Lepkowski referred to the player as ‘brilliant’ a few months ago on the Liquidator Podcast, and we couldn’t help but agree with his assessment.
