Kevin Phillips delighted by West Brom signing Matt Clarke on loan
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is delighted with West Brom after a deal was agreed for them to sign Brighton defender Matt Clarke on loan.
Earlier this week, the Albion announced on Twitter they had signed the 24-year-old on a season-long deal.
Clarke spent the last two seasons on loan at Derby County, impressing for the East Midlands club despite their struggles at the wrong end of the Championship.
He played 81 times in total for the Rams and could offer a lot of vital Championship experience for West Brom next season, according to Phillips.
“He’s a solid defender,” Phillips told West Brom News. “He’s got an aerial threat, he’s got that experience as well.
“If you get someone in and around him who’s a little bit younger, he could be a good signing.
“He’s one of those unsung heroes who go in and perform week in, week out. He’s probably a seven-and-a-half or eight out of 10 every week.
“It’s not going to break the bank but when I read that I thought that’s a good signing.
“I watched him a bit at Derby last season and on his day, he’s a handful in both boxes. It’s a decent signing.”
Clarke is West Brom’s second new addition of the summer with Valerien Ismael also signing midfielder Alex Mowatt after he was released by Barnsley.
With the new 2021/22 Championship season less than a month away from kicking off, it’s certainly time for the Baggies to ramp up their transfer business.
Ismael’s centre-back options were already fairly decent with Semi Ajayi, Dara O’Shea, Kyle Bartley and Cedric Kipre all to choose from for next term.
It remains to be seen if one or two of them will be moved on as a result of Clarke’s arrival.
In other West Brom news, fans should be excited by this young trio who could shine in the Championship next season.
