West Ham stun Kevin Phillips with lowball bid for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is “very surprised” by West Ham for not meeting what West Brom are demanding for Sam Johnstone.
Last week, the London Evening Standard reported that the Baggies want at least £10million for the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who performed brilliant for the Black Country club in the Premier League last season.
Sky Sports reported that a £6million bid from the Hammers had been rejected by the Albion but the London club have now made Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola their top target.
Even though Johnstone is in the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns, Phillips feels as though West Brom are well within their rights to demand what they are for the England international.
However, he feels that there could be other factors that have scared West Ham off.
Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “It surprises me because that’s nothing for an international player that performed so well in the Premier League last season.
“If you pay that money, you’ve got a goalkeeper for the next three, four or five years.
“I’m surprised about that but whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. Wages could be a bit of a thing as well now that he’s an international, agents automatically ask for me, which they’re entitled to.
“Maybe there’s a bit more to it but I’m very surprised if it’s just about the fee.”
When asked how much Albion should expect for Johnstone, Phillips added: “I would say between £12.5million and £15million, something around that figure.”
Johnstone has made 131 appearances in all competitions for West Brom and made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League last season.
He earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships this summer and won his debut cap in a warm-up friendly against Romania.
In other West Brom news, fans should be excited by this young trio who could shine in the Championship next season.
