Watford striker Andre Gray is on West Brom transfer radar

West Brom are considering Watford’s Andre Gray as they bid to sign a new centre-forward this summer, according to The Athletic.

The online news outlet’s West Brom correspondent, Steve Madeley, claims the 30-year-old who reached the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Jamaica this summer, is “an option” for the West Midlands club for the second season running.

MLS star Daryl Dike and Manchester City teenager Liam Delap are also on Albion’s radar but moves for both could prove complicated.

Striker on the agenda

Forwards Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu both left The Hawthorns earlier this summer while loanee Mbaye Diagne returned to his parent club Galatasaray, leaving Albion short on options at the top of the pitch.

Callum Robinson was deployed in the number nine role in the 2-2- draw at Bournemouth on Friday, though it was a fairly fluid front three with Karlan Grant and Grady Diangana taking up central positions.

Matt Phillips and Kenneth Zohore came on later in the match, with the latter a natural striker, but the former Cardiff City man looks likely to play the role of ‘super’ sub this season if he does not seal an exit before the conclusion of the current transfer window.

Gray looks surplus to requirements at Vicarage Road this season with the likes of Troy Deeney and Joao Pedro firmly ahead of him in the pecking order, and his four-season spell with the Hornets has yielded just 19 goals in 113 appearances.

He netted just five times in 30 Championship outings last term, but his previous record stands with the best.

Gray scored 16 goals in 45 second-tier games for Brentford during the 2014/15 campaign before going seven better for Burnley the following season.

He then scored nine times in his maiden Premier League campaign but has struggled over the past few years.

We wouldn’t place the Wolverhampton-born striker at the top of our wanted list, but if deals for Delap and Dike prove difficult to complete, Gray could represent solid backup option.
