Ex-Wolves midfielder David Jones compares new West Brom signing Adam Reach to Ryan Giggs
Former Wolves midfielder David Jones has made an exciting Adam Reach comparison after the 28-year-old’s arrival at West Brom earlier this summer.
Jones, who played for Manchester United alongside Ryan Giggs, the all-time record Premier League assist-maker, believes Reach has similar qualities to those possessed by Giggs in his heyday.
Speaking to The Athletic, Jones was full of praise for his former Sheffield Wednesday teammate.
“He was one of those players who had an x-factor,” Jones said. “He could produce something out of nothing and in training he would come up with a little bit of magic.
“When I trained with United as a young lad, I trained with Ryan Giggs and Adam reminded me of some of his qualities. They are both ball-carriers but they both have those little bits of vision. Giggs got a lot of credit for how great he was, but one thing that was under-rated with Giggs was his passing and his vision.
“Some were special. Reachy probably isn’t best-known for his passing but he used to show little bits of vision and he has a bit of vision that a lot of players don’t have.”
Those who have not paid close attention to Sheffield Wednesday over the last few years may only know Reach from his long-range goals that often find themselves being played over and over on Championship weekend highlights.
But there is more to his game than thundering shots from distance.
His pinpoint deliveries are a huge asset from the left-hand side of the pitch and could prove crucial if we sign a centre-forward who is strong aerially.
Of course, we’re not expecting Reach to start the majority of games as he will likely provide back-up for Conor Townend at left wing-back, but the incessant nature of the Championship should ensure he gets some valuable game time at The Hawthorns.
If he can show his Giggs-like abilities on occasions then he could prove a shrewd addition as a free transfer.
