Glenn Murray blown away by West Brom defender Darnell Furlong v Sheffield United
Glenn Murray hailed Darnell Furlong after the full-back played a starring role as West Brom beat Sheffield United 4-0 on Wednesday evening.
Furlong, 25, created chaos at The Hawthorns with his long throw-ins that have already become a trademark under Valerien Ismael during his early reign as Baggies boss.
Speaking on Sky Sports [18/08/21] after the Luton-born defender was awarded with the Man of the Match award, former Brighton and Crystal Palace striker Murray was effusive in his praise for the Albion man.
“Deservedly so,” he said. “A lot of his good play came from throw-ins funnily enough and he’s got Man of the Match. He reminds me of a young Rory Delap at Stoke City back in the day.
“But not only that, I thought he was exceptional going both ways. Going forward he put in some very, very dangerous crosses and here we can see his last-ditch tackle.
“This was at 4-0 down and you can see the desire.
“He was integral up and down the right-hand side for West Brom this evening.”
West Brom weapon
Ismael appears to have unleashed a monster in Furlong this season.
The right-back was one of our better performers last season, and we have seen him take long throws before, but we didn’t realise he could perform to these levels.
Murray is right – it really is like Delap and Stoke in the Premier League all those years ago.
That’s not to say we’re playing exactly the same as the Potters.
But there are similarities in terms of the way we are unsettling opponents and using set-pieces, particularly throw-ins, to our advantage.
After taking an early lead through an own-goal against Luton Town last weekend, we benefited from another one to break the deadlock on Wednesday as Furlong’s throw-in once again caused havoc.
The onus is on the rest of the Championship to come up with a solution to the problem.
It won’t be easy.
