Keith Hackett: Valerien Ismael may face EFL charge after West Brom v Peterborough incident
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League & FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Brom.
Keith Hackett believes Valerien Ismael and Darren Ferguson may face charges from the EFL after the managers clashed during Peterborough United’s 1-0 loss to West Brom.
The Saturday night clash at London Road was a lively affair but it appeared to be petering out to a stalemate until Semi Ajayi struck a last-minute winner.
That goal sparked jubilant scenes on the sideline from Ismael and the rest of the Albion bench, with Posh boss Ferguson at odds with the Frenchman over his reaction.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, ex-FIFA referee Hackett suggests the pair could be in line to receive sanctions from the league.
“It probably did [damage the game],” Hackett said.
“The referee on his report form has an ‘extraordinary incidents’ section so he can report it, the English Football League can review it and then determine whether in fact charges need to be brought.
“I suspect that process will be going through today [Monday, 30/08/21] and then maybe in a couple of days both managers might get charged.”
West Brom’s win saw them climb back up to second spot after their fourth successive Championship victory, while Peterborough dropped to 20th with just one win in their first five games.
The next meeting between the two clubs is not scheduled until January 22 2022, so there will be some time for the managers to sort out their differences.
