Kevin Phillips suggests late West Brom bid for Dwight Gayle

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips would be delighted to see West Brom stage a late bid to sign Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United.

Gayle, 30, spent the entire 2018/19 campaign on loan at The Hawthorns and scored 24 goals but ultimately failed to fire the West Midlands club to promotion as they lost on penalties to Aston Villa in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

The ex-Crystal Palace frontman has since made 38 Premier League appearances for Newcastle over the last two seasons, scoring five times, but his influence on Tyneside has continually reduced with Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin taking centre stage for the Magpies.

When asked about any potential late business for West Brom as the Tuesday transfer deadline draws ever near, ex-Albion striker Phillips named Gayle as someone he would like to see at The Hawthorns.

“I think they’re covered at striker now, but if they can get Gayle in that would be brilliant,” Phillips told West Brom News. “I don’t think that will happen, though.

“Possibly [Trevoh] Chalobah as well. A midfield player and maybe, maybe, another wide player. We’ve got Matty Phillips but perhaps another wide player would be useful.

“I think that midfield area is key.”

One more in?

West Brom have not exactly been erratic in the summer transfer window – while there are always names that get banded about, it seems there have been less this year as the club take a more measured approach to the market.

In fairness, with the squad available to him, Valerien Ismael can afford to be picky.

The existing crop should already have too much for most of the Championship, though there is certainly an argument to be made that it needs to be beefed up in terms of quantity.

In an ideal world for Albion fans, the club would splash out on a new striker, but that looks less likely after Jordan Hugill arrived on loan last week, while midfielder Jayson Molumby made a similar move from Brighton.
