Kevin Phillips reacts as West Brom fail to ship out Kenneth Zohore before deadline

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

West Brom failed to move on striker Kenneth Zohore before the transfer window closed despite reported plans to do so.

The Express & Star reported prior to the window closing that Zohore, 27, had been made available to leave The Hawthorns.

The Dane has suffered a turgid couple of years at the Albion, playing next to no part in the promotion-winning season before an injury-hit campaign on loan at Millwall.

Since returning to the Black Country club, Zohore has found himself left out of three of Valerien Ismael’s matchday squads in the Championship and suffered an awful performance in the Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.

Ex-Baggies striker Kevin Phillips feels that start against Arsenal was Ismael putting Zohore in the shop window.

However, he can understand why the ex-Cardiff forward didn’t leave because he may have made it clear he wanted to stay.

Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “I am surprised because I think the club made it clear when he played in the cup that was to put him in the shop window to show everyone he was fit.

But then I’m not surprised because they didn’t bring anyone in.

West Brom haven’t got the biggest squad in the world and I know they’ve got a lot of young players but in terms of strikers with experience, they haven’t got a lot.

I’m not surprised in the terms of keeping him around because at least he’s got a bit of experience.

It’s 50/50 for me, if they brought somebody in he would have definitely gone out on loan or left.

The club probably wanted to get rid but maybe the player dug his heels in. We don’t know the full extent.”

In other West Brom news, talkSPORT reporters have blasted the club for a “disgrace” they noticed against Arsenal.
