Sam Johnstone already on Southampton shortlist for new transfer

Southampton have placed West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone high on their shortlist, according to The Athletic.

The Baggies number one is currently away on England duty after failing to leave The Hawthorns this summer.

There have been talks of a contract extension since with less than one year on his current deal, but nothing has come from that yet.

Johnstone will soon be available on a free transfer should a resolution over a new deal not be found.

After suggestions that the keeper would be frozen out by the Baggies, Valerien Ismael held a meeting to clear the air and reassure the keeper this summer.

That then led to the contract talks, which will likely include a release clause should we fail to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

West Brom wanted £12million this summer with West Ham the only interested club, that passed and now Southampton are in the queue.

One to watch.

The Saints and Ralph Hassenhuttl are said to be watching closely this season, with this deal surely relying on many factors.

Ismael could guide West Brom back to the Premier League, and who knows? Southampton could even face relegation after losing the likes of Danny Ings.

Should either of those things happen, this deal would surely be off the table immediately next summer.

All eyes are now on this supposed contract extension and whether or not a compromise can be found, there will be many crossing their fingers in the coming weeks and months.

Hopefully, he’s going nowhere.
