Kevin Phillips wants West Brom to offer new deal to Sam Johnstone

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

West Brom would be “crazy” if they didn’t offer goalkeeper Sam Johnstone a new contract, according to Kevin Phillips.

Johnstone, 28, made his second appearance for England on Sunday, keeping a clean sheet as the Three Lions won 4-0 against Andorra at Wembley.

The ex-Manchester United goalkeeper was linked with a move away from The Hawthorns in the summer transfer window as he’s in the final year of his contract at the Baggies.

Albion may have missed out on their last chance to cash in on the impressive shot-stopper but Phillips feels that a new deal should be on the cards for the England ace.

Speaking to West Brom News, Super Kev said: “You’d like to think there are contracts negotiations going on in the background now unless the player’s said, ‘I’m going to hang on now and see my contract out and leave on a free in the summer’.

He could get a massive contract somewhere because a fee won’t have to be paid so it will be interesting to see what will happen.

I’m sure the club will offer him a deal – they’d be crazy not to.

In the short-term, it’s great that he hasn’t gone anywhere because he’s going to be a massive part of their season.

He’ll win many points for West Brom this season, that’s for sure.”

Johnstone made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League last season and according to the Daily Mail, England goalkeeper coach Martyn Margetson was blown away by his performances in training at the Euros in the summer.

Johnstone was pushing for Dean Henderson’s number two spot before the Manchester United goalkeeper’s injury.

And based on Southgate’s decision to start Johnstone against Andorra on Sunday, it looks as though the Albion number one is second in the pecking order behind Jordan Pickford.

In other West Brom news, talkSPORT reporters have blasted the club for a “disgrace” they noticed against Arsenal.
