Jamie Mackie singles out Darnell Furlong for West Brom v Blackburn

West Brom failed to break the deadlock in their Championship clash with Derby this evening, drawing 0-0.

The Baggies had plenty of chances over the 90 minutes but failed to hit the back of the net, the best of those falling to Semi Ajayi.

Darnell Furlong was one of the main dangermen yet again in his new wing-back role, and Jamie Mackie was blown away by his impact.

Speaking on Sky Sports this evening while watching the game live, Mackie singled out the right-back for his endless running.

“The thing I love about West Brom is they’re so suited to playing in this division,” he said.

“They keep putting relentless pressure on you, and they’ve got very willing runners, Darnell Furlong on the right-hand side is expansive but great energy.

“You can hit him on the diag too so he’s a great option.”

Playing in this five-at-the-back system where we dominate possession has helped Furlong more than anyone in this squad.

Releasing that defensive pressure that was constantly on his back in the Premier League has seen him flourish.

His long throws and set-pieces make him one of the most dangerous defenders in the entire division and he continued to spark problems all evening.

With few options behind him, Ismael will be praying that nothing serious affects Furlong, but we don’t see that happening.

Furlong is at the heart of most things positive in this new system, and he will have a big say on many games this season going forward, although he should probably have won this one for us.
