Kevin Phillips: Kean Bryan has big opportunity at West Brom
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kean Bryan has been handed a major opportunity to impress at West Brom after he signed on a free transfer last week, according to Kevin Phillips.
Bryan, 24, was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season and was linked with a move to The Hawthorns during the summer transfer window.
However, a move for the ex-Manchester City centre-back failed to materialise while the transfer window was open until Dara O’Shea suffered a serious injury while playing for the Republic of Ireland.
Bryan’s now officially joined the Albion on a two-year deal and Phillips claims his former club beat Premier League sides to the free agent’s signature.
Speaking to West Brom News, he said: “He certainly has [arrived at the right time] and he’s going to get an opportunity.
“When someone gets injured, I don’t like saying it but when one door closes, another one opens. It’s the opportunity now for someone else to step up, fill O’Shea’s boots and stamp their place in that side.
“This will be an opportunist’s moment and it’s good timing for Kean Bryan to come in.
“They fought off a few Premier League clubs [to sign him] and he must have thought, ‘I’m going to have more chances to play now Dara’s injured, I might get a consistent run in the team’. But if you went to a Premier League club, you might not get the game-time.
“It could turn out to be ok for West Brom, let’s just hope the kid hits the ground running.”
Bryan is 24-years-old and his only senior experience above League One came in his 13 Premier League appearances last season for Sheffield United last season as they were relegated.
He scored against Manchester United in a shock win for the Blades and helped them keep clean sheets and win against Aston Villa and Brighton.
However, the jury remains out on the new arrival, who’s hardly done enough in his career to suggest he can fill the void left by O’Shea devastating injury blow.
In other West Brom news, this Albion player appears to have deleted his social media accounts after being abused online.
