Carlton Palmer: Southampton moving for Johnstone next summer is a no-brainer
According to The Athletic, West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is high on the shortlist of Southampton ahead of next summer as they look to strengthen.
Carlton Palmer reckons the Saints coming after the England international is a no brainer, and he still does not understand why a summer move never materialised despite the Baggies demanding around £15million [BBC].
Johnstone was expected to leave following the side’s relegation, but suitors did not meet the asking price of West Brom, and teams are eyeing him as he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
Palmer told This Is Futbol when asked about Southampton’s interest in the Baggies ace: “Yes, it’s a no brainer. I think a lot of clubs will be interested in him on a free. I mean, I still don’t understand why he’s not gone.
“If it’s true that they were only asking for £15million for him, I think at £15million that’s good business. That’s cheap in today’s market.”
Exit on the cards?
West Brom are keen to protect their asset by getting him to agree to the terms of a new deal, but talks remain ongoing and it does not seem much progress has been made.
It is believed a release clause would be included in any deal so as to allow him to leave for a certain fee in the event that promotion isn’t gained.
Failure to secure immediate promotion will surely see the goalie leave, but both parties could be struggling to agree on what the fee in his get-out clause should be.
The power is in Johnstone’s hands as he can leave for nothing, and he is not going to be in a rush to put pen to paper.
West Brom were not ready to lose him for a ridiculous fee in the summer, and they now need to ensure that an instant return to the top-flight is sealed as that is likely to be the only thing that will prevent them from losing such a valuable player for nothing.
Southampton and co will be watching the development with keen interest, and the coming months will surely have a huge say on his future.
In other West Brom news, Andy Carroll has responded to claims the Baggies were keen on a January deal.
