Kevin Phillips: No concerns about Semi Ajayi despite West Brom criticism

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips isn’t worried about Semi Ajayi despite West Brom fans aiming criticism towards the centre-back this season.

Ajayi, 27, did not start any of the Albion’s first four Championship fixtures this season with Valerien Ismael seemingly preferring other players to play ahead of him at the back.

However, injuries to Dara O’Shea and Matt Clarke have seen Ajayi start the last four league games, in which he scored a winner against Peterborough before playing in three draws.

Ajayi’s form at The Hawthorns has been pointed out by sections of West Brom fans, who feel as though the Nigeria international isn’t meeting expectations under Ismael.

Here are some of the tweets aimed at Ajayi’s performances in recent matches:

Despite Ajayi’s stuttering performances, ex-Baggies striker Phillips still has faith in the former Rotherham man.

Speaking to West Brom News, he said: “I think he’s looked solid.

He does the basics really well. He’s a big unit who’s useful in both boxes.

They didn’t really look in danger against Derby but the slight concern is that Millwall had four opportunities on target last weekend and West Brom only had two.

That’s a slight concern but I think Ajayi, with a run in the team, can be a decent player so I have no worries about him playing.”

Ajayi has made 86 appearances in all competitions for Albion since joining from Rotherham in 2019.

He was instrumental in the promotion-winning season under Slaven Bilic but there’s no denying that he struggled in the Premier League and is yet to rediscover his form under Ismael.

In other West Brom news, this Albion player appears to have deleted his social media accounts after being abused online.
